San Ramon City Manager Top Paid City Employee In 2021
San Ramon City Manager Joe Gorton has announced that he will retire in January 2023.
SAN RAMON, CA — San Ramon's City Manager Joe Gorton is the highest paid government employee in the city, according to numbers released by the California State Controller's Office.
Coming in at $285,080 with base pay and benefits, Gorton, who has that he will retire in January 2023, will have served as city manager for six years at the time of his retirement.
Gorton's pay, includes a base rate of $274,298, along with $5,782 in lump sum pay and $5,000 in other pay, which according to the controller's office, could include everything from overtime to meeting stipends and bonus pay. In 2020, he was paid $289,698, with $282,198 in regular pay and $7,500 in lump sum pay.

The next highest paid municipal employee in San Ramon was the chief of police coming in at $284,878, followed by a police captain at $261,907. San Ramon's Public Works director ($256,251) and city attorney ($250,013) rounded out the top five.
Police department-related roles made up six of the city's ten highest employee wages.

The highest paid city council members in the state belonged to the city of Los Angeles, with wages sitting above $200,000. The highest paid mayor in the state belonged to San Francisco, with a wage of $353,802, followed by Los Angeles. The ranking did not differentiate between full- and part-time employees.
