The man, who appeared disoriented and hypothermic when found, was 15 miles off his intended route, according to a report by SFGate.

SANTA BARBARA, CA — A 78-year-old outdoorsman lost in California's Sierra Nevada and battling hypothermia was rescued last month by a group of Boy Scouts out on a backpacking trip, according to a report by SFGate.

Douglas Montgomery, a former scoutmaster himself, had planned a two-week-long solo trip out in the wilderness when he lost his backpack, which contained all his gear and food, according to the report.

Four days into their own backpacking trip, the Boy Scouts ran into Montgomery, who was 15 miles off his planned trail, according to the report.
