Here are the top three stories today in Santa Barbara:

  1. The development of a short-term rental enforcement pilot program was discussed at the Santa Barbara City Council's meeting yesterday, Apr. 25. According to city officials, the enforcement program's goal is to determine whether any illegal short-term rentals are present in Santa Barbara, with the intention of preserving the neighborhood's unique identity and rental housing stock. The program’s aim is to gather accurate information on short-term vacation rentals through investigation and, if necessary, prosecution of operators of illegal rentals. (Santa Barbara News-Press)
  2. According to the Santa Barbara Police Department, a man died after jumping off the Santa Barbara Courthouse clock tower observation decks at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Officers discovered an adult male who was unresponsive on the Anacapa Street side of the courthouse tower. The man was taken in an ambulance to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The coroner's office has been attempting to get in touch with his next of kin; therefore, his identity has not been revealed, and no foul play is suspected. (Noozhawk)
  3. Dozens of medical and healthcare professionals came together at Marion Regional Center on Monday to kick off a pilot program called “Street Medicine, Santa Barbara County" which aims to help improve and better manage homelessness within the area. The team states that over the coming months, the Street Medicine Program will work together, generate new ideas, and gather more information on the specific healthcare needs among Santa Barbara County’s unsheltered population, which they will use to create and develop their plan for improving services. Those that plan to join in lighting up green in May and would like lawn signs (while supplies last) and/or those who would like their building placed on the state list of those participating and recognized by the National Mental Health America office should email Suzanne Grimmesey at suzkirk@sbcbwell.org.
