📰 Here are the top stories in Santa Barbara today:

  1. Former Santa Barbara High School baseball coach Fred Warrecker died at age 84. He retired in 2015 after 43 years of coaching. During his career, he developed several players who reached the major leagues. In 2016, Warrecker was inducted “into the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame.” (Santa Barbara Independent)
  2. A brush fire erupted near a homeless encampment near the Highway 154 on-ramp on Thursday evening. Firefighters responded with three engines. The blaze “spread to about 1/8 of an acre.” (edhat)
  3. An 18-year-old Isla Vista resident was arrested last Sunday. Reportedly, he physically assaulted a 15-year-old teen whom he had given alcohol to. He “threatened to fight the officers and was arrested after he attempted to flee.” (Daily Nexus)
  4. If you love to catch and consume shellfish this weekend, don’t. The algae bloom, which is causing marine mammals to act out aggressively toward humans, has turned “shellfish that is harvested… deadly to consume.” (KEYT)
  5. Amtrak Coast Starlight train is continuing operations. You may remember that earlier this week, a train derailed in Moorpark. Passengers suffered only minor injuries, and crews cleared the tracks. (Santa Barbara News-Press)
