Santa Barbara Dojo Marks 15 Years of Giving with Annual Basket Brigade — the Need Has Never Been Greater

Students, families, and volunteers are coming together to make sure no one in the community goes hungry this holiday

For the 15th year in a row, the Santa Barbara Dojo is turning its martial arts studio into a hub of generosity, collecting food, raising funds, and building Thanksgiving baskets for local families who might otherwise go without. But this year, the need is greater than ever.

In 2024, 140 volunteers assembled and delivered 288 baskets, feeding roughly 1,440 people from low-income households. The Dojo organized over five tons of groceries in just 29 minutes. This year, more than 370 families have requested baskets.

“We set out hoping to reach 280 families,” said Master Wilfred Austin Curtis, owner and head instructor at Santa Barbara Dojo. “But we’ve already received closer to 400 requests. Every time we think we’ve reached our limit, this community finds a way to step up.”

Each basket costs $75 to sponsor, or $37.50 for half a basket, and includes a turkey, sides, and dessert for a family of five. For many, that basket means more than a holiday dinner.

“Last year, I delivered a basket to a family of four living in a one-room apartment,” said one volunteer. “The mother had been sick and unable to go to work, and she didn’t know how she’d afford rent and food. When she saw the groceries, that meal meant food for the week, not just Thanksgiving.”

Co-owner Master Melodee Meyer, who started the Basket Brigade tradition at the Dojo, said the event reflects what martial arts are truly about. “It’s not just about strength or discipline- it’s about compassion,” she said. “We’re grateful for what we have, and we show that gratitude by helping others.”

Now in its second year seeking community sponsors, the Dojo has brought on local supporters including Deco Drywall & Plaster, Teledyne Flir, among others. They’ve also gotten creative: this year’s Coco’s Bake Sale — named for a five-year-old student who raised $800 last year — and a student fundraising challenge will help fund more baskets and inspire kids to give back.

“Every donation matters,” Curtis added. “If you’ve ever wanted to give back or teach your kids what Thanksgiving is truly about, this is the perfect moment. You’ll never forget the feeling of helping someone who really needs it.”
