📰 Here are the top stories today in Santa Barbara:
- Last month, the Santa Barbara Police Department hosted a gun buyback event. Now, we have results. According to officials, they took in 137 firearms, including legal and illegal guns such as homemade ones and vintage pieces. True to their word, the buyback was anonymous. “The only thing we do is run the serial number through the federal database so that we can determine if the gun is actually lost or stolen and can be returned to the owner,” a sergeant explained. (KCBX)
- Hiking after recent rains is dangerous. Firefighters from several departments collaborated on Saturday to rescue a 19-year-old hiker who had slipped and fallen near Tangerine Falls. Rescuers reached her and were able to “transport her to the roadway, where she was taken to the hospital for treatment.” (edhat)
- Does your child know how to swim? Do they know how to swim well? If not, there’s still room at Parks and Recreation Department swimming lessons. They’ll take place at a reduced price at Los Banos del Mar and Ortega Park Pool. “The city says the lessons improve water safety, physical development, cognitive functions, socialization, and confidence building.” (KEYT)
- With 78.9 percent of on-time arrivals and “Mediterranean-style colorful tiles, rustic lanterns, modern art, and beautiful Spanish murals,” the Santa Barbara Municipal Airport is among the most charming in the nation (No. 6) – beating even Long Beach, which came in at No. 9. The most charming is the Branson Airport in Hollister, Missouri, which dazzled with “a wild west vibe, featuring facades of a saloon and sawmill, plus a real babbling creek inside.” (NerdWallet)
- This Saturday, the Goleta Valley Art Association plans to host its second Summer Show & Sale. Head to the Camino Real Marketplace at 10 a.m. and check out the original art. Best of all, a “portion of proceeds will benefit ShelterBox, a nonprofit that helps families and individuals after natural disasters around the world.” (Santa Barbara News-Press)
