EL CAJON, CA — An investigation was underway Wednesday after a 1-year-old girl was found dead in San Diego's East County, authorities said.

Deputies from the Rancho San Diego Station and paramedics from the San Miguel Fire Department responded to a medical emergency around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 1500 block of Penasco Drive in unincorporated El Cajon, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.

Medical personnel found the child unresponsive on the living room floor, Lt. Juan Marquez said.

"Paramedics immediately began CPR and transported the child to a local hospital, where tragically, the baby was pronounced deceased," Marquez said. "The sheriff's Homicide Unit responded, assumed responsibility for the investigation, and are working to determine the circumstances of the death."
