The Department of Environmental Health and Quality’s (DEHQ’s) Vector Control Program (VCP) will conduct an aerial larvicide spot treatment of the Town Center Parkway area breeding site on Thursday, 3/10. The aerial spot treatment will involve a helicopter applying mosquito larvicide granules to Town Center Parkway area breeding site waterways in an effort to reduce mosquito population and the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, including West Nile virus. The purpose of these early aerials spot treatments is to help reduce the current population of mosquito larvae in the water prior to the mosquito season beginning, as the early reduction should help diminish the amount of mosquito activity in these areas for the upcoming mosquito season.
To better protect our communities and the environment, the Vector Control Program (VCP) applies mosquito larvicide via helicopter to mosquito breeding areas that cannot be treated by hand. The granular larvicides used by the Vector Control Program act specifically on mosquito larvae and will not harm people, pets, plants, or wildlife. The larvicide consists of granules containing Lysinibacillus (Bacillus) sphaericus, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, and/or Saccharopolyspora spinosa products. These naturally occurring bacteria target mosquito larvae and prevent them from developing into biting adults.
