Child Dies While Riding Scooter In Chula Vista

An 8-year-old boy was fatally injured after being struck while riding an electric scooter.

CHULA VISTA, CA — An 8-year-old boy has died of injuries sustained over the weekend when he was struck while riding his electric scooter in an Otay Ranch-area neighborhood, authorities reported Monday.

At 2:15 p.m. Sunday, the child was struck in the 2000 block of Tango Loop, just east of state Route 125 and west of Eastlake Parkway in Chula Vista, according to police.

"The child wound up pinned underneath the vehicle, and witnesses used a hydraulic jack to free him," Sgt. Anthony Molina said. "Paramedics took him to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, where he was pronounced dead. His name was withheld pending family notification."

It was unclear who was at fault for the collision.

"At this time, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the collision, and there is no indication any other vehicles were involved," the sergeant said Monday.
