EL CAJON, CA — A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash in San Diego's East County, authorities said.

Officers responded to a report of a man lying in the roadway at 1:53 a.m. Wednesday on the onramp from Second Street to westbound Interstate 8 in El Cajon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The unidentified man was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital with major trauma injury consistent with being struck by a vehicle, the CHP said. He was later pronounced dead.

It was unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. No suspect information was available.

"The crash is still under investigation, and we are working diligently to find a suspect vehicle," CHP Officer Jasmine Lopez told Patch.
