Police Gunfire Wounds Motorist After Truck Hits Officer In East County

EL CAJON, CA — A motorist was wounded by police gunfire Wednesday after driving a pickup truck into an officer outside El Cajon Police Department headquarters, authorities reported.

The law enforcement shooting in the 100 block of Civic Center Way took place shortly after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, ECPD public-affairs Lt. Keith MacArthur told news crews. The condition of the motorist was not immediately available.

The officer hit by the vehicle was taken to a hospital for treatment of apparently non-life-threatening injuries, the lieutenant said.

The shooting occurred as police were preparing a ceremony to celebrate the retirement of an El Cajon police captain, MacArthur told reporters.

At least two officers opened fire on the driver after the truck hit the lawman and then continued moving toward another officer, according to police.
