Poll: Are Labor Unions Dead as a Political Force? Walker Beats Recall
Despite all-out effort, Wisconsin Democrats failed to dislodge the Republican governor.
Gov. Scott Walker, reviled by Democrats, survived a recall election Tuesday in an election seen as a test of labor union clout. Republican Walker had a war chest of $30 million in his bid to retain office, but his opponents were well-funded, too. Even after spearheading a bill that limited collective bargaining rights for teachers and most other government workers, Walker prevailed against union pushback. And in San Diego, labor-related Propositions A and B won—more losses for labor. What does this mean for the union movement?
