CA Mom Helps Inmate Son Get Sentence Cut By 62 Years
Jeremy Stewart of Santee was sentenced to 70 years in prison but his sentence was cut significantly following a petition by his mother.

SAN DIEGO, CA -- Jeremy Stewart of Santee was sentenced to 70 years in prison but his sentence was cut significantly in December following a petition by his mother. The Los Angeles Times reported that Gov. Jerry Brown cut Stewart's sentence to just eight years when he issued other commutations in December.
Stewart was sentenced in 2010 after being "convicted of burglarizing two homes and stealing thousands of dollars in property," the Times reported.
"Stewart had previous convictions for a variety of crimes including other burglaries, receiving stolen property, petty theft and being a felon in possession of a firearm," the article read.

But his sentence was shortened after his mother, Elizabeth Stewart, launched a petition that gained 50,000 supporters, the Times wrote.
"The petition argues that the lengthy sentence was the result of the unjust application of the three-strikes law in effect at the time. The law has since been changed so that nonviolent offenders, like Stewart, would not always receive such lengthy life sentences," the article read.
