Son Fatally Shot During Confrontation With Father ID'd

Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office officials said the Ben Lomond man was shot and killed in what appears to be a case of self-defense.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A man who was shot and killed by his father during a physical confrontation on Sunday in unincorporated Santa Cruz County has been identified by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office. Richard Oates Jr., 30, of Ben Lomond in unincorporated Santa Cruz County, was shot and killed in what appears to be a case of self-defense, according to Sgt. Chris Clark.

Sheriff's officials said the father called for help just before 4:20 p.m. Sunday, saying that he shot Oates Jr. in the upper body after his son attacked him in the 100 block of Ridge Road. Oates Jr. died at the scene.

The shooting is currently under investigation and no further information was immediately available. No arrests have been made and the name of the father won't be released, Clark said.
