Husband of Jim Carrey's Ex-Girlfriend Blames Actor for Her Sherman Oaks Suicide

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Actor Jim Carrey is being sued for wrongful death by his ex-girlfriend's estranged husband, according to court documents.

The suit, filed Monday by Mark Burton of Portland, Oregon, alleges that Carrey supplied Cathriona White with prescription drugs obtained under an assumed name that led to her death. White was discovered dead in her Sherman Oaks home from an overdose of prescription drugs on Sept. 28, 2015, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

The cause of death was ruled as a suicide. A suicide note was found next to her body. White, who was a makeup artist, met Carrey on a film set in 2012. The couple dated off and on for a few years. Carrey reportedly called off the relationship for good four days before White's body was found.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, White's suicide note mentioned the actor by name.

The suit alleges that Carrey was responsible for White's death. According to the complaint, Carrey had installed cameras in White's home, and his assistant had checked on the home on Sept. 24 and noticed that White had not left in more than a day but failed to notify authorities. The suit alleges that Carrey was obsessive in his "controlling and manipulating White."

According to the complaint, Carrey gave White highly addictive painkillers while knowing full well that she was "ill equipped" to manage the drugs outside of a doctor's care. The suit alleges that Carrey illegally obtained the drugs under the false name of Arthur King.

The suit also alleges that Carrey knew about White's state of mental health, her battle with depression and her previous attempts to take her own life.

According to the coroner's toxicology report, White was found to have propranolol — a blood pressure medication, zolpidem — commonly sold as the sleep aid Ambien, and painkillers oxycodone and oxymorphone in her system at the time of her death.

The suit further alleges that Carrey had promised to pay for White's funeral expenses but later reneged. The suit is asking for unspecified damages, lawyers' fees as well as funeral expenses.
