Man Acquitted of Manslaughter in Stabbing Death

A man was acquitted Tuesday of manslaughter in the stabbing death of a transient outside Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center last year.

The Van Nuys Superior Court jury deliberated 3 1/2 hours before acquitting Solomon Lee Washington of voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter in the March 29, 2012, death of Michael Joseph Vizkelety, according to defense attorney Anthony Brooklier.

Washington's attorney said his client -- a janitor at the hospital -- had ``no history of violence'' and acted in self-defense during the run-in with the 48-year-old transient, which occurred about 3 a.m. on the hospital grounds in the 5600 block of De Soto Avenue.

"This man who he'd never met before attacked him,'' Brooklier said after the jury's verdict.

"Given the verdict, we're working on trying to get him his job back,'' Brooklier said.  "He's on administrative suspension pending the outcome of this case.''
