13th Annual First Day Hikes

 13th Annual First Day Hikes

Jack London State Historic Park will kick off the new year with their 13th Annual First Day Hike and a “Gentler Version” of the First Day Hike, both on January 1, 2026.

The traditional trek can be either a personal challenge to make it to the park summit (and a great photo op) or the first step in a commitment to a healthier new year.

The regular First Day hike to the top of Sonoma Mountain begins at 10 a.m. and will conclude at around 3 p.m. The roundtrip route is eight miles long and moderately strenuous.

Reservations are required and can be made at https://jacklondonpark.com/events/first-day-hike-2026/.

A “Gentler Version” of the popular First Day Hike is also offered for those who prefer a shorter, less strenuous hike with plenty of opportunities to appreciate Mother Nature’s grandeur along the way.

The 3.5-mile hike travels through the redwoods with mixed evergreens en route to the magnificent Ancient Redwood, with moderate elevation gain and some uneven, rocky areas.

The “Gentler Version” begins at 11 a.m. and ends at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Reservations are required and can be made at https://jacklondonpark.com/events/gentle-first-day-hike-2026/.

Tickets to either hike are $15 per person, in addition to $10 per car entry fee (up to nine passengers).

Both treks are among many First Day Hikes held throughout the country, supported by America’s State Parks, and at parks statewide with California State Parks.
