California State Assembly Committee Passes Bill Inspired by Municipal Government Scandals

Assemblyman Anthony Rendon is the author of the bill.

The Local Government Committee of the California State Assembly has passed the AB 941 bill with a 9-0 vote.

Assemblyman Anthony Rendon (D-63), who represents both Lynwood and South Gate, authored the bill. While State Controller John Chiang is the bill's sponsor.

This bill increases the State Controller’s authority to identify fiscal misconduct, establish significant consequences for local agencies that operate without proper economic handling, and provide support for agencies to use prior to a crisis.

“AB 941 was inspired by the egregious corruption in the City of Bell that is currently being prosecuted,” said the office of Anthony Rendon in a statement. “Prosecutors alleged that the six ex-council members, the city manager and another city staff member turned the city treasury into ‘their own piggy bank, which they looted at will.’"
