South Gate Councilmember Witnessed Aftermath of Fatal Crash

By Alejandro Lopez de Haro

On Tuesday, March 28, 2013, South Gate Councilmember Jorge Morales spoke about the horror he saw while taking a routine ride along with the South Gate Police Department (SGPD).

“It was like a bomb had gone off,” said Morales as he recalled the scene of the fatal car crash on the intersection of Alameda Street and Firestone Boulevard this past weekend. “There were pieces of cars everywhere, [and] people covered in blood.”

Michael Villalobos, age 20, sustained moderate injuries in the accident and was arrested in connection to the suspected midnight street race, which allegedly resulted in the fatal three-car crash.

Authorities confirmed the death of a 24-year-old woman in the accident, as well as the injuries of six others, including three underage victims.

“It really impacted me,” said Morales. “I have never seen something like this.”

The SGPD was the first police agency at the scene, said Morales to Patch after Tuesday’s council meeting, who also went on to praise went the officers for their efficient response.

“I want to commend the department,” said Morales. “You guys were really on top of it.”

The name of the deceased victim has not been released by the authorities.
