The South Gate Police Department (SGPD) is stepping up its recruitments efforts as funds become available for it to acquire new hires.
Last week, the SGPD announced that it was awarded a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for the purpose of hiring four military veterans to serve as police officers.

The SGPD was one of the more than 200 law enforcement agencies that were given funds from the federal Community Oriented Policing Service. The grants totaled $111 million and 800 full-time police officers will be hired.
South Gate was one of just four California cities to be awarded this grant.

The funding provides up to 75 percent of entry-level wages, as well as fringe benefits for three years. The SGPD will have to pay a minimum of 25 percent of the total cost of each hired officer.
In addition to the four officers, the SGPD is also looking to hire 12 officers in order to fill several positions within their department.
“This is a unique time in that we have the opportunity to not only hire veterans through the grant program, but also general fund money from the city to hire police officers as well,” said
In a short interview with Patch, Davis explained that the SGPD is looking for people who wish to be career officers. Persons who are not happy with the “status quo” upon being hired, and that have the desire to climb the police ranks.
“We are in a hiring push and are looking for the best candidates,” said Davis. “I want quality police officers.”
