South Gate Students Share Experiences From Trip to China
Chinese diplomats and local officials were among those who attended the presentation.
Last Friday, ten high school students from International Studies Learning Center (ISLC) in South Gate, who spent winter break in Beijing and Shanghai, shared their experience at a “debriefing” at their school’s library. The Chinese Deputy Consul General of Los Angeles, Sun Weide, was among those who attended the presentation, which included a short movie and power point.
South Gate officials were also present, such as South Gate Mayor, Bill De Witt, and councilmember Maria Davila.

The trip was sponsored by the Chinese government at the request of Chinese Vice President Xi, who last February visited the school along with U.S Vice President Joe Biden.
According to a Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) press release the students during their trip, "felt right at home speaking Mandarin to Chinese students who answered in English."

The LAUSD Superintendent, John Deasy and Dr. Guillermina Jauregui, the principal of ISLC, also accompanied the students during the trip.
"Traveling is the best form of education,” said Jauregui.“If I cannot take all my students to the world, I bring the world to them.”
