LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Sen. Ron Calderon, D-Montebello, returned to his Sacramento office today and promised he would be cleared of any suspicions of wrongdoing.
Agents from the FBI's Los Angeles field office served search warrants last week at Calderon's office at the Capitol, apparently as part of a probe into consulting fees allegedly paid to the senator's brother Tom, himself a former lawmaker, according to media reports.
"I have returned to the Capitol today to resume my job representing the residents of the 30th Senate District,'' Calderon said in a statement issued through attorney Mark Geragos.
"Please understand that I will not be able to answer any questions regarding the search of last week. However, I can say without hesitation that when all the facts are in, any questions, suspicions or allegations of illegality will be erased."
Geragos said previously there was no justification for the probe. No arrests had been made, nor charges filed, as of this afternoon.
Calderon was elected to the California State Senate in 2006. His district includes Bell, Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Montebello and Whittier, along with other cities.
Born and raised in Montebello, Calderon worked in the manufacturing industry and as a mortgage banker and real estate agent before he was elected.
