Man Suspected of Shooting Marine in Monterey Park Shot by Police

The shooting occurred about Wednesday near Woods Avenue and Fourth Street, and the man was taken to a hospital.

MONTEREY PARK, CA - An investigation was continuing Thursday into an officer-involved shooting in East Los Angeles in which a man wanted on suspicion of attempted murder was wounded by Monterey Park police.

The investigation was being supervised by sheriff's Lt. John Corina, who said there was no new information yet on the OIS, according to sheriff's Deputy Trina Schrader.

The unnamed suspect remained hospitalized Thursday morning and was expected to survive, according to the Monterey Park police.

The shooting occurred about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday near Woods Avenue and Fourth Street, and the man was taken to a hospital, said Monterey Park police Lt. Carrie Mazelin.

No officers were hurt, Mazelin said, adding that the suspect "was wanted for an attempted murder ... in Monterey Park."

According to the Los Angeles Times, the suspect was wanted in connection with the shooting of a U.S. Marine about 2:45 a.m. Monday outside a 7-Eleven store in the 200 block of West Pomona Boulevard. The 34-year-old suspect is a reputed gang member, according to ABC7.

The OIS occurred about a block away from Garfield High School, but classes were not affected.

The suspect allegedly drew a weapon on police while on a bicycle. Video from the scene showed a patrol car's windshield riddled with bullets. Wednesday's shooting occurred in unincorporated county area just south of Monterey Park. Sheriff's homicide detectives and Monterey Park police were investigating.
