"& Juliet" A Must-See Magnificent Magical Majestic Mind Blowing Masterpiece at the Ahmanson Theatre Thru 9/7!
An exquisite enchanting energizing exciting enthralling exuberant extravaganza with a cast of exemplary experts all at the top of their game
There are no words to describe this A+ ace adept adroit astonishing astounding work of art. You'll be mesmerized riveted captivated and intoxicated from start to finish. Featuring songs by the legendary Grammy-winning songwriter/producer Max Martin; a book by David West Read, the Emmy-winning writer from Schitt's Creek; direction by Luke Sheppard; and choreography by Emmy-Award winner Jennifer Weber. Who could ask for anything more?!
What a genius idea to consider a scenario where Juliet lives after Romeo dies and gets a second chance at love. It's as if Shakespeare wrote a 21st century rom-com, as clever as ever with Read's rapid fire, fast paced dialogue overflowing with double entendres, play-on-words, one liners, and puns galore.
According to Read, "We wanted to take Max Martin's music (he's written at least 300 well-known iconic pop songs) and have it be heard by new audiences in new ways. The thought was if we're going to repurpose and reinvent Max's pop songs, we should also be reinventing our story. To me, Shakespearean times is about as far away from modern pop music as you can get, but at the same time, Shakespeare himself was like a pop writer of his day and creating art for the masses. So it felt like there was an interesting parallel between Max and Shakespeare."

You'll recognize many of Max's pop anthems used in this marvelous magnum opus and the artists who sang them, e.g. Since U Been Gone (Kelly Clarkson)‚ Roar (Katy Perry), Baby One More Time (Britney Spears), I Want It That Way (Backstreet Boys), Blinding Lights (The Weeknd)and Can't Stop the Feeling (Justin Timberlake)!

Max wrote the song One More Try specifically for the musical. Read says, "I had a "0.01% writing credit on it because I gave him one lyric ('I'm starting over with tears in my eyes'). But that for me is always a thrill because it's such a bucket list thing to have, in a very small way, written a song with Max Martin."
The terrific tantalizing top notch triple threat talents treat us to a master class with their outstanding, out of this world, over the moon sensations. Each individual in the epitome of excellence ensemble is a superstar in their own rite!
Stand outs include Rachel Webb as ‘Juliet’, Paul-Jordan Jansen as ‘Lance,’ Teal Wicks as ‘Anne Hathaway,’ Corey Mach as ‘Shakespeare,’ Nick Drake as ‘May,’ Kathryn Allison as ‘Angélique,’ Ben Jackson Walker as ‘Romeo,’ and Mateus Leite Cardoso as ‘François.’
Webb commands the stage whenever she appears. Her pure perfection performance demonstrates why she was in the original Broadway production. You won't be able to take your eyes off of her!
Bainbridge Scott, a theatre aficionado and avid photographer, describes the compelling company as "a singing and dancing tour de force. She appreciates most how the presentation "climaxes with Juliet's, Anne's, May's, and Angelique's empowerment." A far cry from Shakespearean days when women were seen and not heard!
The rest of the creative team is comprised of consummate pros: Bill Sherman (Musical Supervision, Orchestrations and Arrangements), Soutra Gilmour (Scenic Design), Paloma Young (Costume Design), Howard Hudson (Lighting Design), Gareth Owen (Sound Design), Andrzej Goulding (Video & Projection Design) and J.
