The latest Star Trek mission boldly went to the continent's box offices this weekend, and opened in the number one spot with $70.6 million beamed aboard Paramount's cash registers.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" has already grossed $84 million, if its Thursday night opening tally is added. But the $70.6 million three-day total is a bit below the high water mark set by the 2009 "Star Trek" movie premiere of $79.2 million.

"The film was a major hit with the fanboy audience, as evidenced by IMAX and its 16 percent portion of the gross," said Hollywood.com Box Office analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

"Iron Man 3" receipts were still strong, but dropped 51 percent in its third week. It was in second place domestically with $35.2 million this weekend, $337 million domestically in three weeks of exhibition, and a worldwide cume over 23 days of just over $1 billion.

"The Great Gatsby" was still going strong with a $23.4 million weekend and $90.2 million two-week running total.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this week, as estimated by the studios, were "Pain & Gain" ($3.1 million), "The Croods" ($2.8 million), "" ($ million), "42" ($2.7 million), "Oblivion" ($2.2 million), "Tyler Perry Presents: Peeples" ($2.2 million), "Mud" ($2.4 million) and "The Big Wedding" ($1.1 million).
