Plant Managers Voted Down by School Board

The Los Angeles Unified School District voted against a proposal that would require all elementary schools to have a full-time plant manager.

The rule applies to 250 elementary schools. Parents and teachers flooded the board members with concerns about the safety and health of their children.

The vote was four against the proposal and three for the idea that would have required the plant managers to stay at elementary schools. District Superintendent Ray Cortines backed the idea to save $11 million from their budget which is estimated at being more  

Board member Steve Zimmer said the parent and teacher support for the positions helped him bolster his arguments to keep them. Another area board member, Tamar Galatzan, voted against the proposal.

Now, it looks as if the schools will be cleaned by a rotating group of custodial staff that will be assigned to three schools and work in shifts.
