Fiery, Fatal Travis AFB Crash Investigated As Security Breach

FAIRFIELD, CA — The FBI and the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations are looking into a security breach Wednesday evening at Travis Air Force Base where a car gained unauthorized access to the base through the main gate, crashed and caught fire killing the driver. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and there were no additional fatalities or injuries, according to the base's public affairs office.

The breach occurred shortly before 7 p.m. The base's security officers, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team,
the Office of Special Investigations and other first responders responded to the scene.

The main gate of the base reopened and all other facilities are now operating as normal, air force officials said this afternoon.

Col. John Klein, 60th Air Mobility Wing commander said, "I am extremely proud of how our first responders quickly addressed the situation to keep Travis and the surrounding area out of harm's way.

"We are fortunate to have enduring relationships with federal and local law enforcement and will continue to work hand-in-hand with them through this investigative process," Klein said.
