Search Continues For Missing Solano County Man Who Dove Into River To Rescue Child

Authorities are continuing to search for a 52-year-old Fairfield man who went missing Saturday after he went into the water near Pittsburg.

SOLANO COUNTY, CA -- Authorities are continuing to search for a 52-year-old Fairfield man who went missing Saturday after he dove into the water near Pittsburg to help rescue his child who had fallen off a boat.

The search for the man, whose identity has not been released, was suspended Saturday evening and resumed Sunday morning and then continued again Monday and Tuesday, according to Sgt. Tony Turnbull, spokesman with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

The incident began just after 3 p.m. on May 20, when Pittsburg police received a report of a man who went into the water from a small fishing boat at Broad Slough, just west of where the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers meet, Turnbull said.

Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies, along with Contra Costa County Fire Protection District rescue crews as well as the U.S. Coast Guard initially responded to the area, but the investigation, was eventually handed over to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, as the area is within county lines.

The missing man was on a boat with his 9-year-old child and at least one other person, according to Turnbull.

When the child fell into the water, the man and a witness nearby both jumped in to rescue the child. The child and the witness were able to get out of the water, however, the man never surfaced, Turnbull said.

None of the people on the boat, including the child, were wearing a lifejacket, according to Turnbull.
