Avoid a Power Outage: DWP Issues Air Conditioning, Appliance Tips

The heat wave gripping the Venice beach coast and points inland has prompted the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power officials to urge customers to limit energy use as much as possible between the hours of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Though power outages have been minimal, officials warn they are still possible, particularly as more people operate their air conditioners to beat the heat. In this kind of heat, too, appliances in general must work harder to perform.

Los Angeles' energy demand has climbed to a high range -- averaging in the upper 5,000-megawatts, according to DWP officials. The all-time high for megawatt consumption is 6,177 megawatts, recorded on Sept. 27, 2010.

Suggestions for conserving energy include:

-- turning the thermostat up to 78 degrees;

-- limiting the use of appliances during peak hours;

-- closing draperies to keep sun out;

-- turning off lights and equipment when not in use;

-- opening windows to create ventilation; and

-- unplugging "energy vampires" such as cellphone charges, DVD players, microwave ovens and other appliances that use energy even when turned off.

In the event of a power failure, customers are urged to report the outage immediately by calling 1 (800) DIAL DWP to ensure that LADWP crews are dispatched to the area.
