Venice High Places In Regional Science Bowl

The young scholars did their school proud in competing in the 27th Annual Science Bowl Regional Competition.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA — A team from Venice High School earned a fourth place finish battling with top schools around the region in the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's 27th Annual Science Bowl Regional Competition in downtown Los Angeles over the weekend.

North Hollywood High School, the annual power house, won the top slot again. Team members will each receive a $1,000 Hitachi Scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C. from April 25-29 to represent Los Angeles in the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl. The team will compete in a field of 65 high school champions from 40 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, including nine teams from California.

It was North Hollywood High's 20th regional championship in the past 22 years. Last year, the team placed second at the National Science Bowl for the fifth time.

Bravo Medical Magnet High School placed second in Saturday's Los Angeles competition. The winner of the third-place trophy was the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, while Venice High School placed fourth.

The National Science Bowl is among the nation's largest science-based academic competitions and the only one sponsored by a federal agency. Since its inception in 1991, more than 290,000 students have participated in the program, according to the LADWP.
