Whitecliff Fire Burns 3 Acres In Walnut Creek

The blaze was one of 58 across Con Fire's jurisdiction Tuesday, with fireworks the suspected cause of 50 of the fires.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — A vegetation fire late Tuesday in Walnut Creek was one of several in Contra Costa County likely caused by fireworks, Con Fire said.

The Whitecliff Fire broke out in the vicinity of 1900 Whitecliff Way near the Rockspring Place entrance to Shell Ridge — shortly before 10 p.m. July 4 and quickly spread to 3 acres.

Some residents of the area started evacuating on their own, Con Fire Spokesperson Steve Hill told Bay City News.

Crews, including from Cal Fire, quickly arrived and stopped the forward spread of the blaze by 10:17 p.m. No structures were harmed and none were threatened, Hill said.

Investigators were still working to confirm whether fireworks were the cause of the fire.

Fireworks were the suspected cause of 50 of 58 fires Tuesday across the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District's jurisdiction.

Additionally, at least one serious injury to a person's hand was caused by fireworks. Further details were not immediately known Wednesday morning about where the fireworks mishap took place.
