Broomfield's Link To Lakeside Amusement Park

Local historian David Forsyth will discuss the legacy of Broomfield's Adolph Zang and his connection to the beloved amusement park.

BROOMFIELD, CO – If you've ever wondered where the name "Zang's Spur" came from in Broomfield, you can find out this Wednesday at an event organized by the Depot Museum in the park that bears that name.

Adolph Zang (1856-1916) was a gold miner, Denver brewer and lover of horses. When he wasn't inspecting his mining interests, he was known to love to visit his 4,000 acre "Elmwood Stock Farm" where Broomfield sits now, where he raised Percheron horses and tended fruit trees.

Zang is also remembered as a real estate speculator and one of the financiers for the 1908 White City amusement park, which later became the beloved "Lakeside Amusement Park."

On Wednesday July 11, local author David Forsyth will share his research from his book "Denver's Lakeside Amusement Park: From the White City Beautiful to a Century of Fun," published by University of Colorado Press in 2016 and available for purchase for $25. Forsyth will discuss "how the park has managed to remain in business for more than a century and provide a unique view on larger changes in society and the amusement park industry," a press release about the event said.

The presentation is part of the Depot Museum's "We are Broomfield" series of talks monthly at the Crescent Grange, 7901 W 120th Ave.

So why is Zang's name is on Zang's Spur? It was the railroad detour that reached into Broomfield where "locally grown grains would be loaded into railroad cars for delivery to the Zang Brewing Co. in Denver," according to the City of Broomfield's brief history website.

The Broomfield Depot Museum is located in Zang's Spur Park at 2201 West 10th Avenue. For further information about the museum see broomfielddepotmuseum.org. The museum is only open on Saturdays from 0 a.m. - 3 p.m. To schedule a weekend or weekday tour for a group of four or more please call 303.460.6824.
