Littleton Police To Begin Extensive Accreditation Process

LITTLETON, CO — The Littleton Police Department has volunteered to go under the microscope for an accreditation that recognizes excellence in law enforcement agencies, the department announced Tuesday.

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, known as CALEA, will examine the Littleton Police Department's procedures, policies, operations and support services.

The department will be accredited if it meets the commission's standards. Local accredited agencies include the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office, Colorado State Patrol and the Parker Police Department. Remaining accredited requires ongoing monitoring — the Littleton Police Department was accredited in 2006 but did not keep up with the process.

As part of the assessment, the public is invited to comment at a call-in session from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Nov. 3. The number to call to speak with a CALEA Assessor is 303-795-3723. The public can also comment in-person the same day from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Community Room at the Littleton Center, 2255 West Berry Avenue.

The accreditation process, which takes four years, requires Littleton police to submit annual reports and participate in annual assessments that prove compliance. The police department complies with around 458 of the commission's standards, police said.
