Man Sentenced To 20 Years For Injuring Sheridan Police Officer

Ismael Rayos, 30, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and threatening a police officer, the Arapahoe County DA said.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, CO — A driver who injured a Sheridan officer while fleeing from police in 2015 was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the Arapahoe County district attorney's office announced Thursday.

Ismael Rayos, 30, pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree assault and threatening a police officer, the DA said.

Sheridan officers were called on April 26, 2015, to a convenience store near West Oxford Avenue and South Federal Boulevard after they received a report of a suspicious vehicle at the store.

When the officers tried to speak with Rayos, he jumped into his car and took off in reverse with the door open, the DA said. The door struck an officer and threw him to the ground, according to authorities.

The officer was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released, the DA said. He is no longer with the Sheridan Police Department.

The car Rayos was driving was found crashed in Denver with a handgun inside, and he remained at large until 2019, when he was taken into custody with the help of the DEA and U.S. Marshals Service.
