No Injuries In Downtown Littleton Apartment Fire

Residents were evacuated around 11 p.m. as a heavy blaze consumed the 3rd floor of a building on Nevada & Church Streets.

LITTLETON, CO – No injuries were reported, but families were displaced as firefighters fought a blaze in a three-story apartment building in downtown Littleton Tuesday night.

The fire on the third floor at South Creek Apartments, at 5891 South Nevada Street, just north of Arapahoe Community College, was first reported around 10:50 p.m.

Callers to 9-1-1 reported "flames and smoke coming from the third floor and roof," according to a statement from the City of Littleton. Firefighters worked with Littleton Police officers to evacuate the building.

"Within minutes a heavy volume of fire consumed the attic and the roof began to collapse," the city said in a press statement. Once everyone was out of the building, two aerial ladders were placed on opposite sides of the building and used to spray water from above, the city reported.

Residents, some draped in blankets, watched the building's top floor burn. Some were moved by the Red Cross to the Arapahoe Community College annex building to keep warm. Eighteen units were left uninhabitable and the Red Cross distributed hotel vouchers.

About 45 firefighters were on the scene with 12 fire vehicles and personnel from Littleton Fire Department and South Metro Fire Rescue. The fire was reduced to hot spots by midnight, but residents remained evacuated for the night. Arapahoe Rescue Patrol youth volunteers helped firefighters with rehab supplies and equipment clean up, the city said.

Investigators said the cause of the fire was accidental.
