Connecticut To Lower Flags, Light Q Bridge In Remembrance Of 9/11 Anniversary
Gov. Ned Lamont directs flags to half-staff and Q Bridge lights red, white, and blue to mark 24th 9/11 anniversary.
CONNECTICUT — Gov. Ned Lamont has ordered U.S. and state flags in Connecticut to be flown at half-staff on Thursday, Sept. 11, in honor of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks.
The flags will remain lowered from sunrise to sunset at the State Capitol and all state-operated buildings. Lamont encouraged municipalities, schools, businesses and residents to follow suit. By federal protocol, no flag should be displayed higher than the U.S. flag.
Lamont also announced the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge in New Haven, widely known as the Q Bridge, will be lit in red, white and blue on Wednesday and Thursday nights. The bridge lighting will include beacons capable of projecting light up to six miles into the night sky.

“On this day 24 years ago, one of the greatest tragedies in American history struck incredibly close to home, taking nearly 3,000 innocent lives, many of whom are from Connecticut,” Lamont said in a statement. ““We will forever pay tribute to those who were taken from us all too soon and honor the heroism of those who gave their lives while rescuing their fellow man, including many first responders. We continue to pray for those in the Armed Forces who are deployed and serving our nation overseas to protect our freedom, as well as the many military heroes whose lives were lost in the ongoing battle to keep us safe since 2001."
Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz noted that 161 victims of the attacks had ties to Connecticut. “In the midst of one of the greatest tragedies in our country’s history, first responders showcased immense bravery by putting their lives on the line, reminding us all of our country’s resiliency. The State of Connecticut will never forget the victims or their loved ones for the sacrifices that they have made and the tragedies they have endured.,” she said.

The site overlooks the Manhattan skyline across Long Island Sound and was used as a gathering place for residents on the morning of the attacks. It later served as a staging area for the Connecticut National Guard’s relief efforts in New York City. The memorial features stones inscribed with the names of the 161 Connecticut victims.
