CT Resident Dies While Competing In Massachusetts Triathlon: Nantucket FD

A Connecticut resident died while competing in the Nantucket Triathlon​ in Massachusetts over the weekend, according to fire officials.

CONNECTICUT — A Connecticut resident died Saturday morning while competing in the Nantucket Triathlon in Massachusetts, according to fire officials.

In a news release, the Nantucket Fire Department said firefighters and lifeguards were alerted to a triathlon participant who was unresponsive in the water around 7 a.m.

Firefighters immediately responded to the beach and staged equipment as lifeguards brought the swimmer to shore, department officials said.

The patient was stabilized following "advanced lifesaving interventions" and taken from a lifeguard ATV to an ambulance waiting in the parking lot. He was then transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital for further medical treatment, officials said.

The resident, who the department only identified as "a visitor from Connecticut," was confirmed dead later that morning, officials said.

"The Nantucket Fire Department is profoundly grateful for the lifeguards' quick actions and heroic efforts," officials said. "Their prompt response and coordinated efforts allowed the patient to be treated and transported to the hospital efficiently."
