Thousands Lose Power, Major Traffic Delays Reported As Strong Storm Hits CT

Numerous weather warnings and watches have been issued due to a strong storm that will impact Connecticut throughout Wednesday.

CONNECTICUT — Thousands of residents are already without power Wednesday morning as outages are predicted to climb throughout the day as a strong storm is moving through the state.

Several inches of rain are predicted to fall, 60 mph wind gusts are forecast, and flood watches have been issued.

Southern Connecticut weather statements via the National Weather Service

Middlesex County and coastal sections of New Haven County and inland New London County:

High wind warning is in effect from noon until 10 p.m. South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected.


Coastal sections of New London County:

High wind warning is in effect from noon until 10 p.m. South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected.


Fairfield County and inland sections of New Haven County:

A wind advisory is in effect from noon until 10 p.m. South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.


Coastal sections of Southern Connecticut:

A coastal flood statement is in effect through Wednesday night. Brief minor flooding of the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline.


Southern Connecticut:

A flood watch is in effect from 1 p.m. through late tonight. "A widespread 2 to 3 inches of rain is expected with localized 4 to 5 inches possible. The heavy rain may result in urban flooding and potentially impact the evening commute. Flooding on some of the quicker responding rivers, streams, and creeks is also possible."


Northern Connecticut weather statements via the National Weather Service

Hartford/Tolland County: A flood watch is in effect from 1 p.m. through Thursday morning.

"A widespread 2-3" of rain with localized 4"+ amounts possible through this evening. This may result in some small stream and mainstem river flooding. Heavy rain may also result in localized urban flooding and potentially impact part of the evening commute.


Hartford/Tolland/Windham County:

A wind advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday. South winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected.


Litchfield County:

Flood watch has been issued from 1 p.m. through Thursday morning. "A low pressure system and a cold front will bring periods of moderate to heavy rain this afternoon into this evening...There is also a chance of thunderstorms with downpours across some of the watch area. Isolated flash flooding and minor to moderate flooding of main stem rivers may occur."

STAMFORD - Delays. I-95 Southbound is congested between Exits 8 and 6 (0.6 miles). Reported Wednesday, December 11 at 1:03 pm.

WESTPORT - Delays. I-95 Southbound is congested between Exits 18 and 16 (2.4 miles). Reported Wednesday, December 11 at 1:04 pm.

FAIRFIELD - Delays. I-95 Northbound is congested between Exits 22 and 24 (1.0 miles). Reported Wednesday, December 11 at 1:39 pm.

NEW HAVEN - Delays. I-95 Southbound is congested between Exits 46 and 42 (1.7 miles). Reported Wednesday, December 11 at 1:40 pm.

GREENWICH - Crash (2 Vehicle) on RT 15 Northbound between Exits 31 and 33. The right lane is closed. Reported Wednesday, December 11 at 1:49 pm.

HARTFORD - Road Work on RT 2 Eastbound before Exit 7 (5.1 miles) in effect today until 3:30 pm. The left lane is closed. Reported Wednesday, December 11 at 10:47 am.
