Dog Tortured, Hit By SUVs ‘Healing Nicely’: Woodbridge Officials
Merritt's wounds are healing nicely, and while she's still a little unsteady on her feet, every step she takes is a little more confident.
WOODBRIDGE, CT - A dog that was tortured as a “bait” dog and struck by two vehicles and left for dead on the Merritt Parkway is incredibly on the mend, Woodbridge Municipal Animal Control said in a new social media post Saturday.
Public donations have raised more than $7,000 to help for the dog’s multiple medical procedures.

An Update on Merritt:
“We would like to start with letting you all know we are overwhelmed by the response of the public to help us with our special girl, Merritt.

“We wish to thank each and everyone one of you who have reached out and helped with Merritt’s care. And not just those who donated money. Every ounce of your outrage and sadness was expressed every time you spoke about it, whether it be a share on Facebook or a conversation with a friend. It has been a rough month for our officers and staff at WAC with major cruelty cases rolling in one after another.
“It has helped ease our hearts to know that we are not alone in fight for justice and decency towards animals. We would like to let you know that we have SURPASSED our initial goal for Merritt’s medical bills and we, again, want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
“Any overflow in funds will go towards Merritt’s continued care and therapy. Merritt thanks you all for helping us give her the best care, something that she wholeheartedly deserves.
“Now here’s an update from our WAC Officer who has been caring for her:
“I am in awe of Merritt’s strength and braveness. To be able to be a part of her journey has been an amazing experience. She has been able to teach us all a lesson that is easily forgotten, keep the faith and the good will come.
“Merritt greets me every day with a wagging tail at the door and continues with that wag any time we meet eyes and I ask her “whose a good girl”? Her wounds are healing nicely, and while she’s still a little unsteady on her feet, every step she takes is a little more confident.
“Despite the trauma Merritt has endured from other dogs she seems to be very forgiving and willing to create relationships. Merritt has been able to quietly observe and admire my dogs while safely secured behind a gate in her very own room. She has begun to form a trusting bond (and maybe a little crush) with my American Bully, Lazarus. I often find him laying in front of her gate quietly just being with her. She is an amazing dog and I can’t wait for her to be able to find her perfect forever home.
“We are also extremely grateful for the donations of Pee Pads, Bully sticks, Grain free Canned food, Blankets and Bed Merritt has received for her recovery.”
