Brookfield Library Announces 'In Your Own Backyard' Series

The next event will be held Tuesday, May 31 with Margaret Robbins of Wild Birds Unlimited.

Brookfield Library presents its "In Your Own Backyard" on Wednesday, June 8 at 7 p.m. Centered on the Connecticut beekeepers and the history of honeybees in Connecticut, the program will be led by Catherine Wolko of the Connecticut Beekeepers Association.

European settlers in North America were not the only colonists to make the new world their new home; honeybees were not native to this continent, either. They were brought here to pollinate apple trees brought over by the colonists. Colonies of honeybees were established in Massachusetts in 1639 and in Connecticut in the 1650s, affecting agriculture and the environment in ways still felt today.

The program is free to attend. Registration is available online as well as through contacting the Brookfield Library via (203) 775-6241.
