Dr. Salon Named New Principal at Center Elementary

The Brookfield Board of Education appointed Dr. Krys Salon as the new Center Elementary School principal this month, taking over for Carrie Killian, who left for maternity leave at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.

Salon came to Brookfield as a Curriculum Leader in 2008 after 14 years as a teacher and teacher leader in the Ridgefield Public Schools. She refers to herself as a collaborative leader, one who works with peers, parents and students to build a positive school culture that allows children to do their best and permits adults to maximize their contribution to the school community.

Salon first assumed the role as interim school principal in the spring of 2012. When recommending her for this permanent appointment, Superintendent of Schools Anthony Bivona cited her demonstrated leadership in her interim capacity and commended her for keeping CES abreast of the latest education methods and for assuring that all CES students have the best learning tools available.

Salon earned an Ed.D in Instructional Leadership from Western Connecticut State University in 2008 after having earned a M.A. in education from the University of New England and a B.S. in education from the University of Maine. Those who have worked with her over the years appreciate her intelligence and her passion for learning. She has extensive training in elementary math and literacy and has subsequently served as a trainer in both domains. Additionally, before taking on the mantel of principal, she assumed numerous roles as a teacher leader in the areas of curriculum development and professional development and served on or led a number of school and district committees.

Salon successfully led CES through its first year implementation of the all-day kindergarten program. This change in program required a sensitive hand as it directly impacted the entire CES community. Teachers had to adapt the program to meet the greater demands of the all-day kindergarten. Curriculum had to be developed which integrated the new Common Core State Standards with higher expectations insuring that the change would yield long-term positive benefits for the children.
