Canton Officials: Potential Surplus in Canton High School Track, Field and Parking Lot Project

While cautioning things could change, officials are anticipating a surplus in the Canton High School track, field and parking lot project.

The 3.6 Million proposal approved by voters last fall included a multi-use synthetic field, track and a new parking lot at Canton High School.

At the Board of Selectmen meeting Wednesday night, Robert Skinner, the town's Chief Administrative Officer, said the town is currently projecting an approximate $128,000 surplus in the project.

While crews are still working on the field portion of the project and things could change, selectmen and School Superintendent Kevin D. Case agreed with Skinner’s suggestion that the Permanent Municipal Building Committee (PMBC) make recommendations for any surplus and bring forward them to the boards of selectmen and education. If there’s any dissent, a joint meeting could be scheduled, officials said

One possibility for any excess funds is to fund a scoreboard, one of the items not included in the project.

“The scoreboard is the most obvious,” Skinner said.

Another possible use of funds, Skinner said, would be “paying” back approximately $65,000 to the town’s “pavement management” program for paving to the side and rear of Canton High School. That paving was not officially part of the bonding packing but officials decided it made sense to have it done at the same time.

The PMBC is slated to meet Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
