Wetlands Walk and Archeology Workshop

Spring activities abound in April with hikes, workshops and lectures offered by the Cheshire Environment Commission. Celebrate Earth Day all month long!

Workshops:

Butterfly Gardening: Tuesday, 4/19 at 7:00pm. Using photographs of caterpillars and butterflies, participants will learn about common species in Connecticut. Lockwood Farm's butterfly garden in Hamden will be used as  a resource for ideas and guidance. Registration required.

Coyotes in Connecticut: Wednesday, 4/20 at 7:00pm. Learn about coyotes and how people can coexist with this wild member of the canine family. Registration required.

Native American Archaeology in Connecticut: Tues, 4/26 at 7:00pm. Connecticut State Archaeologist Dr. Nichloas Bellantoni will speak about Native American sites that he has examined throughout the state. Registration required.

Connecticut Songbirds: Wednesday, 4/27 at 7:00pm. The Cheshire area is home to the Mount Vernon Songbird Sanctuary, a facility focusing on the rehabilitation and reintroduction of migratory songbirds. Learn to identify and support songbirds. Registration required.

Hikes:

Vernal Pool Walk - Ten Mile Lowlands, Thurs., April 21, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Explore this town-owned open space where you'll find salamander and wood frog egg masses in the spring vernal pools surrounding the wetlands of the Ten Mile River. Trail Day at Casertano Property, Sat., April 30, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Join the Environment Commission for trail maintenance of this town-owned open space property. The 89-acre parcel is in west Cheshire which has a wonderful view of the Meriden traprock ridge.  Participants will enjoy a brief property walk followed by trail maintenance.
