JONATHAN MARTINEK OF CHESHIRE RECENTLY HELD A FUNDRAISER TO HELP VICTIMS OF THE MARCH EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI IN JAPAN. THE EVENT AT HIS HOME INCLUDED THE SERVING OF SAPPORO DRAFT BEER AND VARIOUS JAPANESE CULINARY TREATS PREPARED BY JONATHAN AND HIS WIFE SACHIKO, WHO WAS BORN IN JAPAN. Attended by members of the North Haven Rotary Club, friends and neighbors, the event raised about $1,300.
A telethon held on North Haven Community Television brought the total donations to $4,300 toward the club’s goal of $10,000. In cooperation with Connecticut Rotary District 7980, the funds will be used to the purchase two trucks needed to deliver food and medicine in hard hit areas of Japan.
A friend of the Martinkeks in Japan recently told them the situation in Tokyo is much better than two months ago. But the friend said they have to be very careful of electrical consumption and concerns about food safety are ongoing.
