Audrey Zhang and Brendan Pier are Top Scholars

Cheshire High School announces valedictorian and salutatorian for Class of 2011. They're off to Harvard and Boston College this fall.

Audrey Dee Zhang  has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2011. She is the daughter of Wei Zhang and Yuling Chen.  Zhang has taken a rigorous course of study including numerous Advanced Placement courses and has been recognized widely by the College Board.  She is an active member of the National Honor Society and Vice President of the Science National Honor Society.  Her achievement is marked by earning Distinguished Honor Roll all four quarters of each school year.  The teachers who know her best say that she defines the term scholar.

Zhang is the recipient of numerous awards including the Harvard Book Award, the Fred Willets First-Year Chemistry Award, and earned a Perfect Paper distinction on the National Latin Exam. 

Zhang is a distinguished musician playing the piano and as the principal clarinet in the Cheshire High School Symphony Orchestra. She takes a genuine interest in leadership and local politics serving as the secretary to the Young Democrats at Cheshire High School and volunteering for the state and national campaigns for Elizabeth Esty, Dan Malloy, and Chris Murphy.

Zhang's academic achievement, interests and participation in a variety of activities makes her a well rounded young person ready for the challenges that lay ahead. Audrey will be attending Harvard College in the fall.

Brendan William Pier has been named the salutatorian for the Class of 2011. He is the son of Susan Pier and James Pier.  He is a model to his peers and an inspiration to many.  Pier challenged himself at Cheshire High School by taking a challenging academic program with great success.

Pier has been inducted into the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, and the Math Honor Society.  He received the Yale Book Award and was named AP Scholar in 2010.  Brendan earned Distinguished Honors all four years at the high school.  Pier's teachers describe him as one of the finest young men to attend Cheshire High School.

Pier has earned an abundance of awards and distinctions including the Scholar Leader Award, the Scholar Athlete Award, and was a three time member of the All SCC Academic team for tennis. 

His interest in leadership led him to serve as vice president of the Class of 2011 since 2009 and as captain of the tennis team.  Pier is an active member of Habitat for Humanity and has participated in food drives and volunteered at soup kitchens. 

He takes an interest in his classmates’ success by serving as a Peer Tutor in French and Chemistry. Pier is poised for success in college and beyond as a result of his ability to develop clear goals for himself and by applying tenacious effort.  Brendan will be attending Boston College in the fall.
