Cheshire Public Buildings Offer Air Conditioning (Update)

The Town Manager's office says residents are welcome to beat the heat by finding a cool spot in one of Cheshire's public buildings.

Pat Sepp, executive secretary, said folks are staying cool in the lobby of where artwork from grade school children is on display.

The and the are also available for residents to visit.

No official cooling center is set up, Sepp said, but the above buildings are available during operating hours. 

Town Manager Michael Milone said public safety officials will monitor the situation this evening and will make a cooling center available if it's needed. "The triggering mechanism would be if we lose power. We would evaluate it at that time."

Milone said the police and fire department are keeping a watch on residents particularly at senior housing facilities.

He said if anyone needs help, they should call the at 203-271-5500.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning until 10 p.m. tonight for the state. It will feel as hot as 110 degrees at the peak of the day.

The warning was issued because high humidity and heat will combine to make it feel about 10 degrees hotter than the forecasted 100 degrees on Friday. 

During last winter's frigid temperatures, the senior center was opened overnight as a warming center, but Fire Chief Jack Casner said at the time that residents tend to stay with relatives or friends rather than sleep overnight in a public building.
