A Week after Accident, Town Councilor Anne Giddings Remains in Critical Condition (Update)

Broken glass and plastic pieces are spread over a 10-foot-area on Boulder Road near the home of Town Councilor Anne Giddings marking where her car veered off the road a week ago.

The one-car accident involving Giddings occurred after 10 p.m. on March 22 according to the .

"The vehicle hit a pole and ended up on it's roof," said Fire Chief Jack Casner. He said Giddings had to be extricated from the car. She was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury by where she remains in critical condition as of Wed., March 30, according to a hospital spokesperson. 

Giddings had just left a budget workshop at Town Hall when the accident occurred. On March 21, also at a budget workshop, Giddings told another councilor that she wasn't feeling well and perhaps had the flu.

"The car didn't make a left curve, it went up a bank and struck a telephone pole," said Spokesman Lt. James Fasano. He said the pole snapped, closing the road until 4 a.m. on March 23, until the pole could be replaced.

Giddings, a Republican, is in her first term on the Town Council. She is the sister-in-law of former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, who campaigned for her in Cheshire in 2009. A fundraising event for her council race was held at the farm owned by Giddings and her husband Bob. 

Their home at 915 Boulder Road is on a hilly and curvy road that runs through old farm fields between Cheshire and Wallingford. Bob Giddings declined comment on his wife's condition but said he has been with her at the hospital each day for 10-hour stretches.
