Car Strikes Pedestrian in Crosswalk

Danbury police are investigating a car versus pedestrian accident at the intersection of Main and Rose Streets Wednesday at 7:33 p.m.

Danbury Police charged a man after he drove into the Rose Street crosswalk at about 7:33 Wednesday and struck another man walking across the street.

Danbury Police said Howard Ward of Rose Street was driving north on Main Street in his 2000 Dodge Durango when he turned onto Rose Street. At the same time, Lorenzo Pascual Mateo was walking across Rose Street, and Ward told police he didn't see Mateo and couldn't stop.

Police charged Ward with operating under suspension, failure to grant right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, and failure to exercise due care to avoid a pedestrian.

Lorenzo Pascual Mateo was driven to Danbury Hospital, and police said he was in the ICU Thursday. This collision is being investigated by Sgt. Rory DeRocco of the Danbury Police Traffic Division. Any witnesses are asked to please contact the Danbury Police Traffic Division at (203) 797-2157 or (203) 797-2156.
