Danbury Teams With UFC Champions To Launch Youth MMA Program
Danbury partners with UFC fighters Teixeira and Pereira on a new youth MMA program at the War Memorial.

DANBURY, CT — Mayor Roberto Alves on Thursday announced a new partnership between the City of Danbury, the Danbury War Memorial, and mixed martial arts champions Glover Teixeira and Alex “Poatan” Pereira to launch a youth MMA program beginning in early 2026.
The after-school program will be held at the Danbury War Memorial, which is undergoing renovations to include a dedicated training space. Once complete, the facility will host classes led by Teixeira and Pereira, offering instruction in a structured environment focused on building strength, discipline, and confidence among local youth.
Funding for the program will come from the city’s 3 percent cannabis sales tax revenue, which Alves said will be reinvested directly into community initiatives for young residents. The city also plans to seek partnerships with local organizations, including Union Savings Bank, to expand the program’s reach.

“Programs like this are what make Danbury such a special community,” Alves said. “They give our kids a safe and positive space to learn, grow, and believe in themselves. When local champions like Glover and Alex step up to mentor our youth, it sends a powerful message that success starts with discipline, respect, and community.”
Teixeira, a longtime Danbury resident and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, said the program allows him to give back to the city that supported his career. “Martial arts changed my life—it taught me hard work, respect, and perseverance. One of these kids could grow up to be a UFC champion someday,” Teixeira said.

Abraham Kayal, president of the Danbury War Memorial Board of Directors, said the program continues the War Memorial’s mission of strengthening the community through youth development. “Our goal is to provide Danbury’s youth with access to top-tier MMA training, mentorship, and personal growth opportunities,” Kayal said.
City officials said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to promoting fitness, discipline, and leadership among young people. Details on registration and class schedules are expected to be released in the coming months.
