In Memory of Robert S. Cherry, Sr., Founding Member of African American Men's Club of Danbury

Mr. Cherry was a charter member of the Danbury Branch of the NAACP as well as a lifetime member of the National Organization.

DANBURY, CT — Robert S. Cherry, Sr. was born on May 28, 1924 in Greenville, NC. He was the son of the late Almeta Rogers and Willie Cherry and was predeceased by his siblings, Samuel, Charles, Travis and Billy Cherry and Dora Hines.

In 1944, he met and married the love of his life Blanche L. Fooks. They were married for fifty years before she passed in 1994. To this union, four children were born; two daughters, Rena Cherry of Oxford and Lynn Cherry of Danbury and two sons, John Cherry of Danbury and the late Robert Cherry, Jr. of Lindenwold.

In 1944, Robert was drafted in US Navy and toured the South Pacific Islands. After his tour of duty, he received his honorable discharge from the Navy.He found employment with the Norwalk Rubber Company and Connecticut Light and Power from which he retired after 26 years.

In addition to his full time employment, he worked for the New England Furniture Company and held other part time positions.Robert was a charter member of the Danbury Branch NAACP as well as a lifetime member of the National Organization. He was founding member of the African-American Men's Club of Danbury and a member of the Epps Society of Greenville, NC.Robert was an active member of Mt Pleasant AME Zion Church. Robert enjoyed participating in the monthly activities at the Danbury Senior Center.

His legacy will continue through his five grandsons, nine great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and several godchildren. Services were held at the Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church.
